Emergency Lighting on Construction Sites
Plan for emergency lighting when you plan your construction site lighting
When planning lighting for a construction site, tunnel or other demanding work environment, the main focus is usually on providing sufficient light for people to carry out their work safely and efficiently. But what happens if the power suddenly goes out?
A power failure can happen without warning. When it does, the ordinary work lighting goes out as well – reducing visibility, orientation and safety. That is why emergency lighting should be considered as part of the lighting plan from the very beginning.
With the Promitto Emergency Lighting Module for SafeLight and M-Flex, existing LED lighting can provide an additional safety function in the event of a power failure. The module automatically switches to battery operation and keeps the LED lighting on at reduced brightness.
This makes it easier to create a complete lighting solution where both work lighting and emergency lighting are considered from the start.
What happens when the power goes out?
On a construction site, lighting is often essential for safe movement and working conditions. When the power fails, darkness can occur instantly – particularly in tunnels, basements, shafts, stairwells and other areas with limited access to daylight.
Promitto’ s Emergency Lighting Module is designed to provide emergency lighting for SafeLight and M-Flex LED strips if the main power supply fails. The module automatically switches to battery operation, keeping the LED lighting on at 10% of its normal brightness.
A fully charged battery provides up to 1 + 1 hours of emergency lighting. After the first hour, the module will automatically switch off to conserve the battery capacity. If another power failure occurs later, the module will provide an additional hour of emergency lighting.
The purpose is not to replace normal work lighting. Instead, the emergency lighting function ensures that light remains available when the ordinary power supply fails.
Emergency lighting should be planned – not added as an afterthought
Unfortunately, emergency lighting is often something that is considered towards the end of a project. However, on construction sites and temporary installations, it can be beneficial to take a different approach.
When planning construction site lighting, it is worth asking a few simple questions:
- What happens if the power supply fails?
- Where will people be stationed when this happens?
- Which areas need to remain illuminated?
- Where are the escape routes?
- How can people leave the area safely?
- Can the existing work lighting also contribute to safe movement during a power failure?
By asking these questions early, safety can become an integrated part of the lighting solution rather than something that is added later.
This is where an emergency lighting module can make a real difference.
From work lighting to emergency lighting
Promitto Connect is designed as a flexible lighting system where different products can be combined according to the needs of each project.
SafeLight and M-Flex can be used as construction site lighting, while an Emergency Lighting Module adds an additional safety function if the power supply fails.
Take full control over your worksite lighting
With Promitto Connect, you can build a complete and flexible lighting system.
LED strips, floodlights, emergency lighting and accessories are designed to work together within the same system.
This provides a practical advantage: you do not necessarily need to install a completely separate lighting system to provide emergency lighting in areas that are already illuminated with LED strips.
The Promitto Emergency Lighting Module includes:
- Automatic battery operation in the event of a power failure
- Up to 1 + 1 hours of emergency lighting
- 10% of normal LED strip brightness in emergency mode
- IP65-rated enclosure
- Lithium battery
- Maximum load of 1500 W / 100 metres of LED strip
- Operating temperature from -10°C to +50°C
- CE approved
Particularly relevant for construction sites
Conditions on a construction site are constantly changing. Walls are built, floors are added, temporary installations are moved and work areas change throughout the project.
This creates a need for flexible and reliable construction site lighting.
SafeLight and M-Flex are designed for quick and easy installation and can be used in a wide range of environments. Both LED strips can be connected in lengths of up to 150 metres, making them well suited for longer runs of temporary lighting.
By including the Emergency Lighting Module when planning the installation, work lighting and safety can become part of the same solution.
Where can emergency lighting be particularly useful?
Tunnels and underground access routes
In tunnels, workers are often far from natural daylight. A power failure can therefore have a significant impact on visibility and orientation.
LED strips are frequently used as continuous lighting along tunnels, walkways and technical areas. By combining the lighting with an emergency lighting function, illumination can be maintained even if the main power supply fails.
Construction sites and temporary installations
Power supplies on construction sites can be temporary, and lighting installations may need to change as the project progresses.
A flexible emergency lighting solution can therefore be a valuable part of the overall lighting system.
The Emergency Lighting Module can be connected to SafeLight and M-Flex to provide battery backup if the power goes out.
Warehouses, industrial facilities and other work areas
Emergency lighting can also be important in warehouses, industrial facilities, shafts, basements and other areas where access to daylight is limited.
The aim is not necessarily to maintain full working illumination during a power failure. In an emergency situation, the priority is to provide visibility, orientation and safe movement.
A small component that can make a big difference
When planning a lighting installation, it is easy to focus on lumen output, cable lengths, number of luminaires, positioning and power connections.
But safety should also be part of the calculation.
An Emergency Lighting Module is a relatively small component of a complete lighting installation, but it can provide an important additional function when the main power supply fails.
For distributors and contractors, it is therefore worth considering the Emergency Lighting Module whenever a customer is purchasing SafeLight or M-Flex.
Could this lighting also be part of the safety solution if the power goes out?
If the answer is yes, emergency lighting should be considered when the lighting is specified – not afterwards.
Emergency lighting as a natural part of your lighting plan
Good construction site lighting is about more than providing enough light when everything is working as expected.
A well-planned lighting solution should also consider what happens when something goes wrong.
By integrating emergency lighting into the lighting plan from the beginning, it becomes easier to create solutions that support safety, visibility and efficient working conditions.
The Promitto Emergency Lighting Module is designed for exactly this purpose – adding an emergency lighting function to SafeLight and M-Flex when the power supply fails.
So, the next time you plan lighting for a construction site, tunnel, underground access route or other demanding environment, ask one simple question:
What happens to the light if the power goes out?
If the answer is that you need light even then, an Emergency Lighting Module can be a simple way to add an extra level of safety to your lighting solution.
