This is why good work lighting on construction sites is important

Good work lighting is not only essential for safe working conditions but also for achieving quality results. Especially during the darker seasons, when natural light is scarce, inadequate lighting can significantly increase the risk of serious accidents.

First and foremost, proper lighting plays a crucial role in maintaining workers’ health and well-being. Additionally, it allows them to work more efficiently and securely. During the winter months, with limited daylight, the need for supplementary lighting becomes even more critical.

When working in poorly lit areas, workers tend to tire more quickly. As a result, they exert more effort just to maintain focus, which increases the likelihood of errors. Furthermore, this lack of focus elevates the risk of accidents. In fact, in 2020 alone, nearly 2,500 work-related injuries were reported in Norway’s construction industry. Interestingly, falls from heights accounted for around 550 of those accidents, making it the most frequent type of incident.

«We can’t directly link poor lighting as the cause of workplace accidents. However, we know that proper and effective work lighting helps people work better, faster, and more safely. Our goal is to create safe workplaces, prevent accidents, and protect the environment with smart, user-friendly lighting solutions,»

So – what is good work lighting?

Good work lighting involves more than just illumination; it’s about finding the right combination of direct and indirect lighting. To clarify, direct lighting is often referred to as task lighting, while indirect lighting is called general lighting.

Task lighting is designed to focus on the specific area you are working on. In contrast, general lighting ensures that the surrounding areas are well-lit at all times. For instance, task lighting usually has a warmer color temperature, producing a yellower light, while general lighting tends to offer a brighter, whiter light.

One practical solution for general lighting could be installing LED strip lights in the ceiling, while task lighting could be provided by various work lamps. Importantly, both types of lighting benefit greatly from LED technology, which is now the preferred option.

LED is good for the environment AND your wallet

Traditionally, construction sites used vapor lamps for outdoor lighting, while indoors, fluorescent and halogen lights were the norm. However, in recent years, LED lights have become increasingly popular, particularly in situations where sharp and clear lighting is needed.

One major reason for this shift to LED lighting is its environmental benefits. Not only does LED lighting help meet the growing demand for energy-efficient solutions, but it also offers significant savings compared to traditional light bulbs. In fact, LED lights can reduce energy consumption by up to 90%, which not only lowers utility costs but also has a positive impact on the environment by reducing overall energy use and CO2 emissions.

Moreover, LED lights are far more durable than traditional light sources, which means they last much longer. For example, the LED strips from Eledge Lighting have a lifespan of up to 30,000 hours. In addition, unlike traditional lighting, LED lights contain no fragile parts that need frequent replacing.

«The benefits of LED lights are numerous. You save money, reduce your environmental footprint by lowering energy consumption and waste, and minimize fire risks. On top of that, the technology behind LED lights is continuously improving, making solutions even more versatile»,
